Review Culture at Taubman College:

Taubman College is committed to reviews as spaces of discourse, knowledge production, and constructive criticism, centered on the discussion of student work. Reviews provide students with feedback meant to assist in the development of their projects, or broad conceptual frames that unpack the relevance of student work to the discipline, culture, or society at large. The primary audience of a Taubman College review is our student body. We cultivate a review culture that is vital, engaging, and imbued with mutual respect between students, faculty, and reviewers. Recognizing diversity as an asset, consideration for students working across communication or cultural barriers is crucial to the Taubman review culture. Because reviews at various points in a semester and in a student’s education can serve different purposes, we strongly recommend that each review begins with a clear and concise description of the studio and the goals of the review by the studio instructor. Student participation is critical for a successful review, and the nature of that participation should be made clear at the beginning of each review session. We recognize that the conventional review often empowers those who feel most at liberty to speak, while amplifying the marginalization of others. Taubman College actively counteracts this effect by acknowledging the power dynamics that ensue within reviews, experimenting with review formats, and thinking critically about how reviews are spatialized and conducted. Most importantly, all reviewers, faculty, and students agree to actively practice respect and courtesy toward all.
